The Malia District is situated at the northeastern most part of Heraklion Province and consists of four main residential areas: the city of Malia (the district center). Mochos, Stalida (Stalis) and Krasi, located 37km, 40km, 35km and 48km from the city of Heraklion, respectively. The Malia District and more specifically its coastal area, is one of the most well-known tourist destinations in Crete. One of the major attractions for visitors is the Minoan Palace of Malia. Walking through the interior areas of Malia offers hikers the opportunity to enjoy the "other side" of the area: a side less well known that the highly publicized coastline. The rich natural environment of the inland areas offers hikers the opportunity to experience the many variations in terrain that mark the distinctive Cretan landscape. Hikers will encounter many evidences of the area's cultural and natural heritage: Lime kilns, sheep runs, threshing places, stone windmills, farm houses, dry stone walls stone water basins. etc Hikers can explore natural beauty in many forms, from areas forested by evergreen oak (Holm and Kermes oak) to streams bordered by plane and oak trees to grassy areas covered with shrubs and brush, to expanses of light forestation to bare rocky areas. Hiking trails also pass by and through cultivated areas including olive groves and authentic working farms. |

Well-maintained trails and rest areas have been developed over the past few years by the Malia District making it convenient for visitors to enjoy the natural settings of the area. The network of trails connects with paved and farm roads in the area, offering alternatives for exploration. Trails are clearly marked and there are additional information signs in the central squares of the villages Mochos and Krasi and at the entrance of "Hamoprina" recreation area. For all walking tours and climbs, hikers should keep in mind that the best time to walk during summer months is early in the morning. No water supply exists along the trails. At points where trails meet fenced grazing areas, hikers must be sure they close gates behind themselves as they pass. Most trails offer several stopping points where hikers can rest and enjoy the beautiful natural settings and glorious views of miles of coastline in the Heraklion Province.
