Milatos Crete

Milatos Crete

Milatos is one of the most famous fishing villages in eastern Crete, with narrow small streets and limy houses and it has many good fish Tavernas.

There are 400 inhabitants whose occupations are fishing, agriculture and tourism.

Milatos has three beaches where you can enjoy the clear crystal sea, there is also a small sandy beach within the fishing port which offers sun beds, restaurants and hotels.

In the eastern part of the village is the historical Rapas Cave in which, in 1823 a large number of women and children hid in order to escape from the Turks who had surrounded them.

After 15 days they had to surrender, the warriors who were with them were massacred and the women were sold as slaves to the east.

In the southern side of the cave there is a small church which was built in 1935 in memory of the massacred Christians

The cave is 73m long and at its widest point 63m across.

The main entrance takes you into the largest area, once in the cave you get a unique view of the gorge underneath it, and the amazing stalactites and stalagmites which create a magnificent vision.

The Minoan graves are also situated in Milatos which the distinguished archeologists Xanthoudidis and Dabaras uncovered, they also found earthen ware vessels and reliquaries.
