Krassi

The fabulous village of Krassi is located 17 km from Malia on the western foot of the Selena mountain, at an altitude of 600m.  The village belongs to the district of Pediada and is one of the most picturesque and traditional villages.  The name Krassi probably comes from the ancient Greek word Kras-Kara, which means the edge or peak of the mountain.

The village is virtually choked with luxuriant vegetation. It is surrounded by many fruit trees, mainly walnut. The main occupation of the village people is olive growing and stock raising.

The main feature of this unique character village are its picturesque alleys, its beautiful gardens, its landscapes and endless views.

In the village square you will find "Megali Vrissi" (the big fountain) with lots of crystal clear, running water, next to this is a huge Plane Tree whose trunk's circumference is 24 meters, sit for a while under its high branches in the square's its rich shade and have a meal or a refreshing drink.

The warm embrace of the village inhabitants will certainly convey their feelings of love and hospitality.

Nikos Kazantzakis one of the most important Greek writers and philosophers of the 20th century spent quite some time in Krassi as evidenced by the plaque mounted on the spring in the center of the village.
