Stalis - Crete |
| |
|
The name of this beautiful villages comes
from the ancient Greek place name Stalis, however looking at it
now does not show what it used to once be.
During the first decades of the 20th century,
Stalida (as it is also known) was used as a port to transports
goods produced in the area and in Lassithi (Olive Oil, Wine,
Bananas and horticultural goods) to Heraklion using small
sailing vessels. |

Until the 1980's Stalida was nothing more
than a coastal patch with a few houses, kept by the inhabitants
of the village of Mochos mainly because Stalida was considered
to be its haven.
During the 80's new houses and hotels started
to be constructed and tourist development began, there were huge
hotel groups next to small cottage houses this continued
throughout the decades and is still going on now.
The beaches in Stalida are sandy and the
waters are crystal clear you can relax, sunbathe and swim under
the golden sun or you can try out the water sports.
