Mochos

The views going up and down the mountain to the village of Mochos is panoramic and really breath taking, it is situated at an altitude of 400m above sea level and is on the way to the Lissithi Plateau. It is believed that the village name came from the name Macha where Minoan finds have been excavated from.

The superb main square in the centre is densely planted with trees and surround by taverns, cafes, shops, and traditional houses, the church of Panagia is located in the same square, there is also a very small old church called Esodia tis Theotokou which has an engraved chancel screen and beautiful Byzantine icons, the fountain which has been well preserved used to supply the locals with all their water.

Take a deep breath and relax in the calm beautiful village square and enjoy a cup of coffee or a glass of traditional wine and soak up the hospitality of its cultured inhabitants or wander through the romantic alleys of the village and see the neat traditional houses, the plants and enjoy the atmosphere.

Lake Ligaras, which is a nature reserve, is a beautiful oasis just outside the village where you will be able to see herons, swans, ducks and fish.

While you explore Mochos you will come across numerous small picturesque churches, scattered all over the area.

You can attend a number of celebrations that are organised by the local people:

On 19th July there is a Night Mass in the church dedicated to the Prophet Elias (located on the mountain 4 km outside the village) and on the next day you can participate in the festivities with Cretan music and food.

Also on the 14th and 15th August another celebration takes place for the Virgin Mary's Assumption, the festivities take place each year in the village square, where you can listen to live traditional music and enjoy traditional cuisine and exquisite Cretan wine all in a joyful atmosphere.

There is no doubt that the mood and the temperament of the locals will charm you and you will leave the place with a very good impression.
