We welcome you to the famous Municipality of Malia and we thank you for
choosing our beautiful area to spend your holiday, we hope that you
enjoy your time here and that you are able to rest and escape the daily
pressures and routines.
Four districts constitute our Municipality: Malia, Stalis, Mochos and
Krasi.
In Malia and Stalis there are hundreds of quality hotels, tourist
enterprises, commercial shops, cafeterias and restaurants for you to
satisfy your wishes and needs. There are five Banks on the main road in
Malia and one in Stalis for you to do any banking transactions.
You can swim with safety in the clean sea, relax on our sandy beaches
and take part in a lot of sea sports. You can visit the old city of
Malia and walk down the small graphic and paved with flagstone streets
where you can see all the white houses and courtyards with flowers. You
will meet hospitable people, historical churches, quiet traditional
taverns with Cretan delicious food, cafeterias, bars and many shops for
your purchases.
The Palace of Malia, the 3rd largest Minoan Palace in Crete was first
built in approx 1900BC. It is thought to have been built King Sarpidon
the brother of Minoas. Opening hours to the Archeological Site in Malia
are from 08.15 until 15.00 daily.
On the south side of the Palace is the church of "Prophet Elias" from
where you are able to see panoramic views and charming sunsets.
The fertile fields of Malia, produces a lot of agricultural produce
including the famous bananas.
The other two districts with in our Municipality are mountainous
villages: Mochos and Krasi, you can either drive along the safe roads or
you can go up through the traditional pathways from Malia and Stalis to
reach them, giving you the opportunity to smell the perfume of the
Cretan flora.
In the center of Mochos you can see the beautiful square with the major
temple of "Evagelistria", all around the square are restaurants, and
commercial shops. Under the shadows of the old trees you can taste
Cretan dishes, listen to live Cretan music, or you can walk around the
village looking at the stone made houses of Cretan architecture and the
historical churches.
Krasi is a small graphic mountainous village with beautiful scenery. You
can see a very old plane-tree and the stone made fountains with cold
water. For trekking lovers and natural beauty enthusiasts there are
picturesque trails that link the village with the unique "Azilakon"
forest, the recreation site of "Hamoprina" and then continues on to the
forest road towards the area of Vrachasi and finally with the
archaeological site of "Krafi".
We really want you to have a nice time with us and to return home with
the best memories. However please remember to drive within the speed
limits, be aware of the road signs and to always carry your travel
documents.
