Samaria Gorge

What is the Samaria Gorge?

It is Crete's version of the Grand Canyon - A deep ravine immersed in glaring sunshine, deep shadows, mist and ever changing scenery, crystal clear springs and rocks that have been shaped over years by the winter torrents.

The 16 km walk will take the average person 4 - 6 hours, it is not a difficult walk, so even the most unfit person would be able to take part, it is an amazing achievement when you arrive the other side.

During the walk you will discover a huge variety of fauna and flora climbing up the sheer rock faces some of which are unique to Crete. The deserted village of Samaria is an ideal place to rest before continuing on to the "Iron Gates" where the canyon walls on either side nearly touch.

At the end of the walk you will arrive in Aghia Roumeli a small village with plenty of taverns to enjoy a tasty meal and a well earned drink or cool off in the sea and relax on the beach.

Wear a hat and walking shoes or trainers it is not practical to wear sandals and don't forget to take a bottle of water and your camera.
